Two advocacy workshops are being organised, focusing on Open and Distance Learning (ODL), ICT, and Lifelong Learning for Farmers (L3F), in conjunction with the developed National Oil Crop Strategy. One workshop involves 20 Cabinet members of Botswana, while the other engages 30 representatives from ‘Friends of Botswana’ organisations, including bilateral donors, international agencies, and NGOs working in agriculture and development partnerships within the country.

Profiling 5,000 maize farmers and engaging training experts in Financial Literacy, Business Skills, and Good Agricultural Practices. This includes developing training materials on these topics and disseminating training content in the form of short audio clips, videos, SMS messages, or pictures to the profiled farmers. The subsequent step involves monitoring and evaluating the utilization of these messages by the farmers.

Accomplishment

A total of 1,025,669 farmers (527,510 males and 498,159 females) completed training on the commercial cultivation of maize and beans offered by Matumaini Mapya, utilizing real-time telephone messages with audio and visual training materials.

Additionally, 11,333 farmers (4,247 males and 7,086 females) completed training on good banana agronomic practices, also provided by Matumaini Mapya. The training materials were disseminated through telephone-based texts, audio messages, and videos. Furthermore, 64 learners (32 males, 27 females, and 5 persons with disabilities) have started businesses through the L3F programme.These 64 farmers have received an approximate total of CAD 10,334 (TZS 19,294,490) in loans to support their business ventures.

Accomplishment

A total of 7 multimedia training contents were developed on Integrated Pest Management, Good Agricultural Practices, Safe Use of Pesticides, and Post-Harvest Management. Additionally, 133 training messages were disseminated via phone-based SMS to 25,564 farmers, resulting in a total of 525,304 message transmissions. Furthermore, 6 audio training messages were created and distributed to 135 Farmers’ WhatsApp groups.
